Amateur Photographer Magazine – Film Portraits

August 1st, 2015

Here is an article I wrote recently for the August 1, 2015 issue of Amateur Photographer magazine – “Shoot a Film Portrait”.  You might find it of interest if you have never tried analogue film photography.  Old film cameras can now be purchased on eBay for next to nothing and 35mm AGFA Vista 200 Plus colour film can be bought from Poundland for only £1 a roll in the UK.  Bargain!  If you are used to using a 35mm digital camera and looking for that next step ‘up’ with your photos then film photography offers a cheap entry point to the world of medium format cameras.  Iconic camera brands such as Hassalblad, Rolleiflex, Mamiya and more can be picked up for less than the price of some modern lenses and they will last far longer if looked after.

  1. I wrote before that I always manage to pick out your photo’s on Flikr, there the ones I go ooh I like that one. Now that has extended to Amateur Photography as I only buy in occasionally but I did buy that edition and this was one of the photo’s that caught my eye. On a different note I’ll be looking forward to your apprasel of the M240 vs M9, for what you want, i.e. modern abilities in low light it might be fine, as you’ll be using your Film cameras. I borrowed one but despite liking the new body , I never liked the files compared to the CCD option. Leica are user testing a new IR filter for the M9 sensor that will prevent the corrosion in the future, so if you do spend a little time with the M240 and decide to return to the M9 the new filter should be being fitted to those camera effected.

    1. Hi Adam, Aah thanks very kind! Yes there will be an M240-M9 review in the pipeline after I have had chance to get used to the M. Yes I had heard that about the M9 too so as you say good as a backup. Coming soon(ish!) Thanks for your support. Matt
