Best value digital Leica M camera?
When it comes to digital Leica cameras most people are searching for that “best bang for the buck camera”. The most camera for the least money! The problem is, as with many things in life, there is a strong correlation between money spend and features received in return. Spend less, get less. Spend more, get more camera/ more features.

1. How many digital Leica M cameras were made?
The goal for this article is to give you a basic understanding of the most common digital Leica M cameras and how they compare to each other. There are 19 different digital Leica M cameras to choose from (excluding limited editions) at the time of writing so we need to group them into families and similar types.
Let’s first look at the release dates of each digital Leica M series camera.

2. Digital Leica M camera release dates
- 2006 – Leica M8 (First digital Leica camera)
- 2008 – Leica M8.2
- 2009 – Leica M9 (First full frame digital Leica)
- 2011 – Leica M9-P
- 2012 – Leica M Monochrom (First B&W digital Leica)
- 2012 – Leica M Typ 240, Leica M-P Typ 240, Leica M-E Typ 220
- 2015 – Leica M Monochrom Typ 246, Leica M Typ 262
- 2016 – Leica M-D Typ 262
- 2017 – Leica M10
- 2018 – Leica M10-P, Leica M10-D
- 2020 – Leica M10 Monochrom
- 2022 – Leica M11
- 2023 – Leica M11-P, Leica M11 Monochrom
- 2024 – Leica M11-D
3. Leica M series “families”
As you can see from the timelines list, Leica like to release multiple variants of each camera type. I’ve called these families but it’s not a Leica term. The long line of cameras released looks confusing but if we break it down we’ll find a similar pattern. From my grouping I’m going to say there are five Leica M camera lines or families.
- Leica M8 + M8.2
- Leica M9 series
- Leica M240 series
- Leica M10 series
- Leica M11 series
4. Leica variants for each Leica M series
With a few exceptions, for each Leica M line of cameras there are up to 5 common variants
- Basic model (name = family name) ie. Leica M10
- Updated version (family name – “P“) ie. Leica M10-P
- High resolution model (family name – “R“) ie. Leica M10-R
- Camera without LCD (family name – “D“) ie. Leica M10-D
- B&W sensor version (family name “Monochrom“) ie. Leica M10 Monochrom
4.1 – Features of Leica M camera variants
Before you know what Leica M camera to buy you need to understand which variant type may suit you and then which camera model. Let’s cover the 5 Leica variants first. We have the basic models of each camera (which will be covered below) plus up to 3 special variant models.
4.2 – “P” variants – Leica M9-P, MP, M10-P, M11-P
Similar to the basic camera model but include a few small upgrades. Common features –
- No Leica red dot on the front of the camera body (more stealth)
- Leica script on the camera top plate (similar to Leica M3 film camera)
- Quieter shutter (M10-P vs M10)
- Adding functions such as touch screen and levelling (M10-P vs M10)
- Increased internal storage (64GB on M11 to 256GB on M11-P)
4.3 – “R” variants – Leica M10-R
Similar design and features to the basic camera model but a few key differences –
- Increased sensor resolution (now 40MP not 24MP)
- Added option for long exposures (to 16mins)
4.4 – “D” variants – Leica M-D, Leica M10-D, Leica M11-D
Similar to the basic camera model but one key difference –
- No LCD display (so more like a digital analogue experience)
- Leica FOTOS app on you phone connects via Wi-Fi to change settings
4.5 – Monochrom cameras – Leica M Monochrom, M246 Monochrom, M10 Monochrom, M11 Monochrom
Common features of these cameras include –
- Monochrome sensor (No colour photos)
- Similar design to the Leica “P” model with no red Leica dot
- Top plate is similar to basic model with no Leica logo
- Improved dynamic range and low light performance
5. Leica camera sensors – CCD vs CMOS
5.1 – Cameras grouped by sensor type
- Kodak CCD sensor – Leica M8, Leica M9 cameras
- CMOS sensors – Leica M240, M262, M10, M11 cameras
5.2 – Benefits of CCD sensor cameras like the Leica M9
Many would agree that the CCD sensors give you better colours vs CMOS. When I moved from the Leica M9 to the Leica M240 I really struggled to enjoy the photos. I wrote and article about this and tried to return my M240 several times back to Leica as I was so disappointed by the image quality.
Time is a great healer and eventually I developed my MrLeica presets for each Leica camera to try to convert the flat RAW (DNG) files into something more inspiring. Now I happily use all CMOS sensor Leica cameras.
CCD sensors also produce a more filmic black and white look from my experience in addition to the nice colours.
5. 3 – Why CMOS sensors replaced the CCD sensor
If we only look at this in very basic terms, CMOS sensors give you improved dynamic range (so you retain more highlight and shadow detail) and a much improved low light performance.
To my knowledge there have been no Leica cameras with CMOS sensors issues (all cameras after the M9 cameras) unlike the troubled Leica M9 with the Kodak CCD sensor corrosion.

6. Smallest Leica M camera (thinnest)
Again we can group Leica M cameras by their dimensions –
- 138x77x38 – Leica M3 (1954)(Benchmark) – 138mm (W) x 77mm (H) x 38mm (D)
- 138x80x37 – Leica M8, Leica M9 cameras (thinnest)
- 138x80x42 – Leica M240, Leica M262 cameras (fattest)
- 138x80x39 – Leica M10, Leica M11 cameras
You can see that the classic Leica M film cameras are slightly less tall that the digital bodies and dimensions have stayed pretty similar throughout with the exception of the fatter M240 series cameras.

7. Lightest Leica M camera (digital)
If weight matters to you we can group Leica M cameras from lightest to most heavy –
- 530-542g – Black Leica M11 cameras (lightest)
- 585-600g – Leica M8, Leica M9 cameras (excluding M Monochrom) + M-E, M262
- 640g – Silver Leica M11 cameras
- 660g – Leica M10 cameras
- 680g – Leica M240 cameras, M-D 262 and M Monochrome
Leica M240 series cameras are heavier but also have a big battery that lasts ages. The Leica M10 series seem the worst choice here as they are heavy cameras yet you need to carry spare batteries too.

8. Leica M camera comparison
Rather than try to compare every Leica camera combination, let’s cover the unique features and stand out benefits of each Leica M camera family, from oldest to most recent.
9. First digital M camera – Leica M8
The Leica M8 was the first digital Leica M camera released back in 2006. That makes it 19 years old this year. Almost unheard of for a digital camera!
9.1 – Unique features of Leica M8
- Not full frame. This is a 1.333x crop sensor camera
- 10.3MP sensor – Being the oldest camera here
- CCD sensor (Poor in low light)
- No AA (anti-alias) filter so gives sharper images
- No IR filter so you need a colour correction filter on your lens
- No LiveView so cannot use EVF units
- Low resolution 2.5″ LCD screen
- Slow buffering compared to modern cameras
9.2 – Reasons to buy a Leica M8?
- Most affordable digital Leica M camera
- CCD sensor “photo look” (more filmic)
- No known issue with CCD sensor (unlike Leica M9)
- Excellent for sharp B&W photos
- Good digital analogue experience for B&W photos
- 1/250 max flash sync speed (all other cameras are 1/180)
- 1/8000 max shutter speed (all other M cameras are 1/4000)
9.3 – Why you should avoid the Leica M8
- Too slow for fast paced photography
- No LiveView so rangefinder focusing only
- Struggles in low light
- 10MP sensor means try to crop in camera
- The need for a colour correction filter for each lens
- Crop sensor not full frame (50mm lens is not 50mm etc)
9.4 – Leica M8 sample photos
9.5 – Leica M8 presets for Lightroom
It’s been some years since I owned my Leica M8 but I still make my Leica M8 presets available. Download presets here.
9.6 – Personal experience with the Leica M8
My second digital Leica camera was the Leica M8 that I bought used in 2014 as may backup Leica camera. Fantastic camera and especially good for black and white. I miss the filmic look but not the slow speed!
The Leica M8 + Leica M9 was my wedding photography setup for a few years after moving away from the Nikon D800. I finally sold the M8 in 2020 as by that time I had bought the Leica CL and was shooting mostly mirrorless. I don’t think I lost any money on owning the Leica M8 on all the years I owned it.

10. Leica M9 – First full frame digital Leica
So for each new Leica M camera line release following the Leica M8 I will point out reasons why you might want to upgrade from the previous model.
10.1 – Unique features of Leica M9
- Cheapest full frame digital Leica M camera
- Best colours of any digital Leica M camera
- Thinner than all later M cameras
- Lighter than most later M cameras
- Same 2.5″ fixed LCD display (no LV)
- Takes the same battery as the Leica M8
10.2 – Leica M8 vs Leica M9 – Reasons to upgrade
- Full frame CCD sensor
- 18MP sensor vs 10MP
- Better for colour photography
- Improvements to buffering speed
10.3 – Reasons to avoid the Leica M9
- Sensor corrosion issue
- Too slow (buffering)
- Limited high ISO
- No LiveView
10.4 – Leica M9 sample photos
10.5 – Leica M9 presets for Lightroom
Leica M9 users are usually lovers of CCD sensor cameras. For me the Leica M9 still gives the best colours and I developed presets to edit the files. Download presets here.
10.6 – Personal experience with the Leica M9
The Leica M9 was my first digital Leica camera which I bought used in 2013 shortly after teaching a photography workshop. My student Chris brought 2 cases full of cameras for the day, a full Nikon D810 kit with G series lenses and a Leica M9 with Leica Summilux lenses.
Chris asked if I’d like to try his Leica M9 and within a few hours I’d bought one and was in the process of selling my Nikon gear. It was that good despite being an older 18MP camera against the near flagship 36MP Nikon DSLR. It was thanks to the Leica M9 that I also started this MrLeica blog in 2013. Thanks Chris!

11. Leica M240 – First CMOS sensor Leica M camera
11.1 – Unique features of Leica M240
- First Leica M camera with LiveView
- CMOS sensor replaces CCD sensors
- Different battery to Leica M8/M9
11.2 – Leica M9 vs Leica M240 – Reasons to upgrade
- 24MP sensor vs 18MP
- Better low light performance
- Improved dynamic range
- 3″ higher resolution LCD screen
- Option of LiveView + EVF/ Visoflex attachment
- Ability to adapt no RF-coupled lenses
- Can use your Leica R lenses (focus with EVF)
- Larger battery / improved battery life
11.3 – Reasons to avoid the Leica M240
- Fatter than most Leica M cameras
- Heavier than most Leica M cameras
- Files look more generic vs Leica M9 CCD images
11.4 – Leica M240 sample images
11.5 – Leica M240 presets for Lightroom
After buying the Leica M262 I made a new MrLeica preset pack for this family of cameras. Download presets here.
11.6 – Personal experience with the Leica M240
In 2015 I part exchanged my well used Leica M9 (with diagnosed corroding CCD sensor) for a nearly new Leica M Typ 240 via the Leica Mayfair store in London. I still had the camera 9 years later but it saw less use once I bought the Leica CL, Leica SL and Leica Q cameras.

12. Leica M262
The Leica M262 is in the same family as the Leica M240 above but I split it out as I own the camera so know it well.
12.1 – Unique features – Leica M262
- The main feature lacking in the M262 vs M240 is LiveView
12.2 – Leica M240 vs Leica M262 – Reasons to upgrade
- 60g lighter than the Leica M240 yet the same size
- Extended battery life as no LiveView
- No LV means you have to embrace the rangefinder
12.3 – Reasons to avoid the Leica M262
- No LiveView / EVF option
- Without LV you can’t adapt Leica R lenses / Nikon lenses
- You will miss focus unless your lens pairs perfectly
- Camera must be well calibrated (like M8/M9)
12.4 – Leica M262 sample photos
12.5 – Leica M262 presets for Lightroom
You can enjoy my Leica M262 preset pack with the M262, Leica M240 and Leica MP as all cameras have the same sensor. Download presets here.
12.6 – My experience with the Leica M262
I bought a black Leica M262 when my Leica M10 was away in Leica Wetzlar for repair. Coming from the silver Leica M240 I found I preferred the black digital Leica M camera so I sold my trusty M240 to one of my workshop students.
The Leica M262 offers the same punchy colours as the Leica M240 but limits you to use the rangefinder as there is no EVF option. I enjoy the fact that the M262 forces my arm to use the rangefinder for focusing. Equally the disadvantage is your rangefinder needs to be accurately calibrated and you can’t adapt non-rangefinder lenses and focus via LiveView like you can with the Leica M240.

13. Leica M10 digital camera
13.1 – Unique features of Leica M10
- Slimmer design closer to Leica film cameras
- ISO dial mimics film rewind knob of Leica M3
- Feels faster and more modern in all areas
13.2 – Leica M262 vs Leica M10 – Reasons to upgrade
- Leica M10 is slimmer and lighter than M240 / M262
- High ISO performance is perhaps +2 stops better
- Viewfinder area is 30% larger (great if wear glasses)
- Viewfinder magnification increased from 0.68x to 0.73x
- Reduced LiveView lag and improved optional Visoflex unit
- Wifi feature added (so you can transfer photos easier)
13.3 – Reasons to avoid the Leica M10
- Smaller M10 battery doesn’t last as long as M240 series
- Don’t notice larger finder if use 1.4x diopter like Light Lens Lab
- Video function removed (Occasionally could be useful)
- Leica M10 cameras hold value well so are still expensive
- There are better value Leica cameras (See Leica SL vs M10 video)
13.4 – Leica M10 sample photos

13.5 – Leica M10 presets
After buying my Leica M10 and converting it to a Leica M10-P I developed my usual MrLeica preset pack for the camera so I could edit my photos. Download presets here.
13.6 – Personal experience with the Leica M10
The Leica M10 had always seemed too expensive (even used) so I didn’t really consider them. Once the Leica M11 had been out for around for a few years I finally got lucky and spotted a well used Leica M10 way below normal asking price. I jumped at the opportunity and have been enjoying my M10 camera ever since.
If you see me using a Leica M10-P it because I converted my M10 to a M10-P. See the full M10-M10P article.
14. Leica M11 digital camera
New for 2022, the highly anticipated Leica M11. Some Leica purists didn’t like the move away from the traditional Leica M bottom plates design but it works well and reminds me of my Leica SL camera.
14.1 – Unique features – Leica M11
The Leica M11 features many benefits over previous cameras so I’ll list them as reasons to upgrade instead.
14.2 – Leica M10 vs Leica M11 – Reasons to upgrade
- 18MP/36MP/60MP sensor options vs 24MP
- Higher capacity quick release Leica SL style battery
- Maximum shutter speed of 1/16000 (electronic) vs 1/4000
- Base ISO of 64 vs ISO 200 (Great with fast lenses)
- First Leica M camera with USB-C charging option (Great)
- Black Leica M11 and M11-P are the lightest production M cameras
- First Leica M camera without a bottom plate – faster access
- 64GB internal storage – first Leica M camera to offer this
14.3 – Reasons to avoid the Leica M11
- Expensive (being the latest and greatest Leica M cameras)
- 60MP files will slow down my current MacBook (and fill it fast)
- Some M11 users experience issues with these new cameras
14.4 – Leica M11 sample images
14.5 – Leica M11 presets for Lightroom
Thanks to my awesome Leica workshop students I’ve borrowed Leica M11 cameras on multiple occasions for multiple days. This allowed me to develop the MrLeica Leica M11 preset pack. Download presets here.

14.6 – My experience with the Leica M11
Thanks to my awesome Leica workshop students I have used both the Leica M11 and Leica M11 Monochrom cameras. I love the lightweight black Leica M11 and the new “modern features” tick my boxes as a user. One day I will get one as my lightweight every day carry digital camera. For now I’m happy with my Leica M10.

15. Price – How much is a Leica M camera?
So we know what these cameras can offer but how much is a Leica M camera? Prices vary from month to month, by region and by country but to give you a rough idea below are the current prices I found when looking online in the UK. I cover the basic camera models for used prices plus current Leica M cameras if buying new.
15.1 Used digital Leica M camera prices
- Leica M8 – £1600
- Leica M9 – £3000
- Leica M240 – £2300
- Leica M10 – £3600
- Leica M11 – £5800
15.2 New Leica M camera prices
- Leica M11 – £6900
- Leica M11-P – £8100
- Leica M11-D – £8100
- Leica M11M – £8300
15.3 Cost of new Leica M film cameras
- Leica M6 re-issue – £4850
- Leica MP – £5000
- Leica M-A – £4550
I include these Leica film cameras only for completeness. View the full Leica M film camera comparison article for 35mm film Leica cameras.
16. Are Leica cameras a good investment?
Can you buy Leica cameras as an investment? The short answer is, when I see the used Leica M camera prices today of those I sold, if I’d keep all the Leica M cameras I sold I would have made more money selling them today. Crazy I know.
The Leica M8 and Leica M9 camera prices have gone up year on year for at least the last 5 years. I should have kept them! (Note, this is partly due to inflation and the devaluing of money. £1000 today buys a lot less than 5+ years ago). My Leica M240 that I sold last year is also now listing for more that I sold it for.
Warning, this is not sure for all cameras. It will depend on if you buy your Leica camera new or used as to whether you will likely loose money on your investment. Let’s cover that next.
17. Do Leica cameras hold their value?
A common question, “Do Leica cameras hold their value?” Answer, yes and no.
If you buy your Leica camera new and soon after release there is a very high chance that if you sell you will loose quite a bit of money. If however you can wait some years and buy older camera models you then have a much safer investment. Cameras are like cars and drop most of their money when you first take them home.
17.1 – Rent a Leica camera for only £100!
After the initial price drop the decrease in value year on year (depreciation) slows to perhaps as little as £100-150 per year. That means you get to enjoy a premium Leica camera for a full year and it only costs £100 when you resell it.
For me that is fantastic value for money and it’s why most of my Leica cameras are older models.
17.2 – Leica as investment (M,CL,SL,Q)
When we talk about, do Leica cameras hold their money and buying a Leica as an investment, we need to also consider the specific Leica camera models. Not all Leica cameras hold their value equally.
Ranked best investment to worst –
- Leica CL – Great (Hold value as discontinued)
- Leica M – Great (If buy used and old models)
- Leica Q – Good (Better than other brands)
- Leica SL – Poor (Generic mirrorless camera)
Tip – Special edition/ limited run Leica cameras tend to hold their value the best as they become collectable over time. One example could be the Leica Reporter cameras in green which normally list for more than regular models. Leica P models also seem to retain their value better than standard models. (I think everyone wants that sexy Leica script on the top plate!)

17.3 – Leica M are a good choice
Of all the mainstream Leica cameras I feel the Leica M cameras are both the most iconic and best investment if you buy used. No other camera brand can offer the Leica M experience and equally no other digital Leica offers the same true Leica shooting experience.
18. Best value Leica M camera in 2025?
18.1 – Best value digital Leica M cameras
So with everything covered, what is the best value Leica M camera in 2025? If you want the best bang for the buck and the best chance of your Leica holding its value I would look at the Leica M240 series cameras. That being the Leica M262, Leica MP, and Leica M240.
I feel the Leica M9 cameras are now overpriced for what they offer because of the demand for the CCD sensor (and finding a clean copy). The Leica M8 is APS-C not full frame and is even more limited than the M9. Perhaps not the best purchase as your only camera.
If you are looking to pick up the Leica M8 or M9 for fun and own other cameras already then these models should hold their value well based on historic prices.

18.2 – Best value Leica cameras (any)
If you truly want the best value Leica camera from any camera series, film or digital I would highly recommend Leica iii cameras, and if you like SLRs, Leica R cameras. These cameras are often overlooked for the more iconic Leica M cameras so prices are cheap. (When I say cheap I mean in Leica terms, and perhaps similar to a used Nikon SLR like the Nikon FE2).
19. Best Leica camera in 2025?
Let’s look as ‘the best’ based on three criteria –
19.1 – Need high ISO and fast LiveView?
If you are looking to buy your first Leica M camera today I would look between the Leica M240 series and Leica M10 series cameras. If you need the ability to shoot in low light or plan to use the EVF a lot the Leica M10 is the better choice.
(Note – If you plan to use LiveView a lot with an EVF unit on the hotshoe skip the M cameras and just buy a used Leica SL instead! The experience will be so much better).
19.2 – Save money and use the rangefinder
Warning, if you decide to go the Leica M10 route be sure to buy spare batteries. Do you actually need high ISO abilities? If you rarely shoot above ISO 800 and only use the rangefinder for focusing perhaps save some cash and get a Leica M240 series cameras instead.
19.3 – Latest and greatest
Do you like to buy the best regardless of the price? If yes you should look at Leica M11 cameras. I love the fact that the black Leica M11 is the lightest digital M camera and you can charge it via USB-C. When the prices drop in the future I will likely invest in a Leica M11-P but for now I’m happy with my older models.

20. Do you really want a Leica M camera?
I speak to many photographers and one question I always ask during our 1:1 Zoom calls is “Do you really want a Leica M camera?” I say this as rangefinder cameras are not for everyone.
Most photographers would find it much easier taking photos with a Leica SL series camera compared to an M. Leica SL bodies are cheaper and you can still use your favourite Leica M lenses via a Light Lens Lab L-M helicoid adapter. SL cameras offer photographers endless benefits over M bodies but they give a more generic shooting experience.
Is Leica overpriced?
So the age-old question. Are Leica cameras overpriced? If you ask anyone that doesn’t use a Leica they will likely say yes. Leica cameras often give you fewer features and yet cost more than the mainstream cameras brands. When most photographers think of Leica they probably think of the latest digital Leica M costing £8000+ (and then you need a lens!). For me that is overpriced vs used models.
What people forget is older Leica M cameras can often be bought for the price of a Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji camera. For me this is the sweet spot. I’m careful with my spending on most things in life but I don’t mind buying Leica cameras.
Leica M camera workshops
If you’ve just bought a Leica camera and are searching for Leica M camera workshops I can help. I’ve been teaching Leica workshops for over a decade, both in London and overseas. Read some of the workshop testimonials and feel free to contact me for more details.
Best lens for a Leica M camera?
What is the best lens for a Leica M camera? This is a huge topic and will depend on many factors such as what you photograph, how you see the world, what rendering you like and of course your budget.
I offer 1:1 Zoom calls to help answer your questions so you get your purchase right first time. This is especially important if you are spending £2000+ on a new Leica lens. Read the Zoom call testimonials and find reviews of most Leica M mount lenses by visiting lenses in the review section.

Best camera bag for Leica M camera?
What is the best camera bag for a Leica camera? My preference is either the Wotancraft 3.5L Pilot bag or Wotancraft EDC Canteener 3.5L. If you select the 3.5L size camera bags you can carry two Leica M bodies and 3-4 small Leica M lenses (or 1 camera and a big bottle of water/ snack).

Note – Pilot bags are slightly larger and have a sealed top + offer you the benefit of add-on pouches so you can carry more kit.
If you prefer to use a smaller 1 camera 1 lens setup check out the Wotancraft 2L Pilot bags.

Favourite camera strap for Leica M series cameras?
If you’ve seen my YouTube videos I often get asked what camera straps I use. After trying many camera straps over the last decade I’ve settled on Wotancraft camera straps. I love that I can now match my watch strap to my camera strap too! (To get a matching set just buy a camera strap and then email them to request a watch strap).

Nice article! Used SL’s are too cheap for what they offer to pass up almost. Hopefully pushes M10 prices even a bit lower haha.
Thanks Thomas! Yes SL series cameras at current prices are a no brainer for those that prefer to use the EVF on Leica cameras.
Amazing article, Matt – I love your YouTube videos, and your article didn’t disappoint: you are always very clear, and provide a lot of substance for your thoughts / recommendations. I’m so happy to read your “never-shallow” content !! Congratulations, and keep coming !!
Thanks Edson! Very kind
Regarding thickness of the Leica bodies: I have owned my M6TTL forever, and in the meantime have owned M8, M9 and M (262). All of those digital cameras, including the M8 and M9, are thicker in the body than the M6 (and the other film cameras before it). I don’t think that the impression you give that the M8 and M9 were as slim as the older film bodies is correct.
All of these digital cameras are about the same thickness, and all are noticeably thicker than the M6 (and all earlier film Ms), and feel the worse for it.
It was not until the M10 that the thickness of the body returned to that of the film cameras, and, to my mind, this was what made the M10 the first really good digital Leica, feeling just like a somewhat heavy M6.
Thank goodness that Leica has retained the sensible shutter speed dial introduced in the M6TTL for its digital cameras!
Thanks yes correct, the M8 and M9 are thicker than M film cameras due to the screen. The M240 is the fat Leica which was a chunky one, then the M10 and M11 went slimmer again. Cheers.
I am considering the re-release of the M6 but have looked at the older used models other than buying new and starting fresh is there any advantage other than price? David C.
Hi David, please watch my Re-issue M6 video on YouTube as it mentions the differences to the classic model I have. Cheers
